Continuous Intraoperative Monitoring (CIOM)

About procedure

Continuous Intraoperative Monitoring (CIOM) during thyroid surgery protects the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN), at risk of injury during thyroidectomies. Continuous nerve function assessment through electromyography (EMG) by placing electrodes in the innervated muscles offers real-time feedback on nerve integrity and function, enabling the surgeon to identify and preserve these critical nerves throughout the surgery. Reducing nerve damage risk, CIOM helps prevent postoperative complications such as vocal cord paralysis and voice changes, enhancing patient safety and surgical outcomes in thyroid procedures.
